It would be nice to score. They are a good team. We all knew that coming in. But the kids played hard.” South managed little offense against that tough defense. Mario Tooley ran hard but managed just 54 yards on 15 carries to pace the Cougar offense. Damien Brown, who was called up from junior var sity play, got into the starting rota tion and ran the ball well. Williams was sacked three times and the Cougars lost the ball on three fum bles. Ciro Piccirillo punted the ball seven times for a 30-yard average. For the Stallions, Kent Nealey rushed for 125 yards and two touch downs while Dashaun Stephens added two touchdowns on runs of 47 and 10 yards in gaining 66 for the night. Ravenell added another South Columbus touchdown on a 3 yard run. “They have athletes, three or four backs,” said coach Brozy, “and we don’t have backs capable of doing the things that they do.” South Brunswick was without starters Wes Kidd, Jason Frick, Craig Williams, Jason Tooley, Nick Green, Rufus Randolph and Ernest Griffin. They were ejected from the game at the East Columbus contest two weeks ago by game officials for their participation in a game-ending fight (see related story). While that incident remains under investiga tion by state high school athletic association officials the players were on the sidelines at Friday’s game and offered fans and parents an open apology for what happened. South Columbus rolled into Jack Campbell Stadium at Boiling Spring Lakes having been ranked eighth in the state among 1A teams for the first time last week. They showed just why they were awarded that ranking. In two weeks, the Stallions will finish the season at West Brunswick to face the Trojans for what may be the battle for the championship. West Brunswick is also 6-0 in the league. “We were limited to six or eight plays tonight,” said coach Brozy. “That’s all we could run. It’s just too much information for the kids too quickly.” The two teams did not play a junior varsity game last week for players were called up from the JV squad to take the place of the seven varsity players who were suspended for one game. South Columbus scored on each of their six possessions in the first half and on four of five possessions in the shortened second half. Dashaun Stephens started the rout with a 10-yard touchdown run with 10: fl left in the first quarter. The Stallions scored twice more in the first quarter — on a 9-yard run by Nealey and a 65-yard pass from Fonveille to Ravenell to take a quick 23-0 lead. That was the only pass the Stallions attempted all night. In the second quarter, the Stallions scored on their first three posses sions and watched as the clock ran out on them in their fourth posses sion with 38 seconds left following South Brunswick’s Tammi Batson rises above the net for a spike in recent volleyball action. The Lady Cougars traveled to Swansboro last week in the first round of the state 2A playoffs but were defeated. a South Brunswick tumble on the Cougar 31. Nealey scored on an 18 yard run, Stephens from 42 yards away and Ravenell on a 3-yard plunge to take the 43-0 lead. In the second half, South Columbus scored four more touch downs with Marcus Smith adding three of those on runs of 35, 44 and 70 yards away. The Stallions scored on each of their three possessions in the third quarter and on one of two possessions in a 10-minute fourth quarter. Smith raced 70 yards for that score after South Brunswick turned the ball over on downs. “You can’t take a program of our size and lose the players that we lost and be competitive," said Brozy. “The kids learned something. I learned something. I think we all learned something this week with the situation at hand." South Brunswick travels to Whiteville this Friday and will have its entire team ready for action. The seven suspended players will be back, and South did not sustain any injuries in the South Columbus bat tle. Whiteville. however, will be looking for revenge. Last season. South set a school scoring record with a 70-7 win over the Wolfpack after everything went right for the Cougars and nothing seemed to go right for .the Wolfpack.
